Rare Georgian Sterling Silver P & A Bateman Cheese Toasting Dish 1794

 

Made in London by Peter and Ann Bateman in 1794. The base is designed to hold hot water, to keep the toast warm whilst cheese is melted by an open fire, with the help of the detachable reflector. Total silver weight, without the handle, 857 grams. In excellent condition, the base measures 22.7cm x 15cm. Both parts have an engraved crest.
